SMC Workshop: Write A Better Bio!

  • Mayday Space 176 Saint Nicholas Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11237 United States (map)

There are so many things you have to take care of as an independent musician. From booking shows, running your social media, building your fanbase, tracking down money you’re owed to actually making music (and rehearsing, writing, recording, releasing)…it’s a list that never ends.

And of course, there’s the bio…a task often neglected until a promoter asks you if you can please send one over for the website and newsletter. So you throw something together that you hate and send it over and try to forget about it. It doesn’t seem to make a difference.

But what if there was a different way? Instead of viewing your bio as an obligatory and mind-numbing task in a long line of mind-numbing tasks, understanding what a good bio can do as well as how you can accomplish this (and what to avoid) can make this process easier and more effective.

This workshop is designed to bring independent artists together in a safe and sharing environment to collectively critique and improve upon the writing in our bios (as well as press releases and other marketing materials). This experience will be interactive and will require you to share your work and discuss it with others. Workshops are most productive when attendees show up ready to share their own work as well as engage with others!

What to bring:

Please bring at least 5 printed copies of the piece you wish to work on. These will be handed out to the group for reference while reading and discussing and will be returned with written feedback from the other attendees.

Please note that this workshop will be limited to 12 participants.

Suggested donation: $15

All funds raised by The Sound Mind Collective will be allocated via democratic process towards projects that further the goals of the Collective as they pertain to the education, empowerment, and unification of artists and the arts in our local communities. If you are interested in joining the collective please email
